One of CSOM’s original mandates has been and remains to provide training for probation and parole agencies and other stakeholders across the country who share responsibility for sex offender management. In the spirit of this mandate, CSOM designs and conducts training events at national, regional, and statewide professional conferences, and in specific jurisdictions (cities, counties, states, and regions of the country) that are designed to address the particular substantive needs and issues of the host agencies. In addition, the project is developing a comprehensive set of curricula that can be used by probation and parole staff, treatment providers, victim advocates, law enforcement personnel, judges, prosecutors, and justice system educators to plan and develop their own live training events on a variety of specific issues related to sex offender management.
The following curricula are available:
- Understanding Sex Offenders: An Introductory Curriculum
- Supervision of Sex Offenders in the Community
- An Overview of Sex Offender Treatment for a Non–Clinical Audience
- The Effective Management of Juvenile Sex Offenders in the Community
- The Role of the Victim and Victim Advocate in Managing Sex Offenders
- Educating the Community about Sexual Assault and the Management of Sex Offenders in the Community
- Secondary Trauma and the Management of Sex Offenders
Each curriculum includes:
- An introduction section and a “user’s guide” with background information and guidance for trainers;
- Outlines that list the major topics covered and the recommended time allocated to each;
- Presentation content and teaching notes with suggestions for using the slides and learning activities;
- Slides—which can be downloaded, printed, photocopied, and distributed to participants—that can be used by trainers to highlight the main teaching points made during the training;
- Participant materials (including learning activities and substantive resource materials) that can also be downloaded, printed, photocopied, and distributed to participants; and
- An evaluation form that trainers may find helpful in assessing the effectiveness of the training.
Each curriculum is also available on CD–ROM. The CD–ROM versions of the curricula are particularly useful to those who do not have access to the Internet or who have a particularly slow Internet connection.
